Failing Gracefully

Have you ever felt like a failure? I know I have. There have been seasons in my life where I felt like nothing I did bore good fruit (or any fruit for that matter). The only thing I could think of during these times was my failures. No matter what I tried, I felt unworthy and incapable. But, can I be honest? Most of that feeling came because I was seeking the approval of man and not God. I was so desperately seeking affirmation from my relationships and the people I worked with. When I didn’t get this affirmation, I beat myself up.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 2 Peter 1:2

Thank God for growth. With growth comes new perspective. When I look back at those really tough seasons now, I realize that I wasn’t failing at all! I was learning a great deal, planting seeds and experiencing God’s grace firsthand. Now, if I have a rough week where I feel like I’m “failing,” I remember these three things:

  1. Affirmation comes from God. “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” Psalms 139:14a
  2. Good lessons are learned through tough trials
  3. God gives grace in abundance so I should let myself have some. And so should you. “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9a

So the next time you are having a rough day, week, or season where you feel like a failure. Remember that you are not. God is working all of these things for your good. Romans 8:28. Seek affirmation from the one who created you, learn your lessons well and allow yourself to fail gracefully.
